Four older trees must come down in Kingsbury Commons near the western trail. The City of Austin Urban Forestry department will be onsite starting Friday, August 8, through Wednesday, August 13, to remove these trees that have experienced loss of major limbs and could potentially pose a danger to park visitors because of their age and fragility. We have loved these trees that provide shade across from the Treehouse and along the trail, and we are sad to see them go.
Please respect the cones and rope that indicate closed areas while this work is being performed.
At Pease Park Conservancy, we would not want to see these beloved trees go without planting new ones. Late fall and winter is the best time to plant trees, so we are putting a plan together to plant native species in a way that will ensure tree variety, health, and biodiversity throughout the park.
In October of 2024, the Conservancy worked with Urban Forestry to have five other Cedar Elms removed near the playground. We are experiencing this tree loss because many of these Cedar Elms were at, or approaching, the typical life span for this type of tree (75-100 years). Safety for park visitors is a top priority for Pease Park Conservancy and the Parks and Recreation Department. When tree assessments show that these older trees pose a risk, we must take action.
Thank you for your understanding.
