Lives Remembered: Black History in Pease Park

  • Kingsbury Commons at Pease Park 1100 Kingsbury Street Austin, TX, 78703 United States (map)

The site of today's Pease District Park was part of the 365-acre Woodlawn homestead owned by former Texas Governor E. M. Pease and his wife, Lucadia. Although Governor Pease supported the Union during the Civil War, research has found that at least 37 individuals were directly enslaved or leased as enslaved labor by the Pease family. This tour recognizes and shares some of the stories of a few of these people.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
With funding from the City of Austin Heritage Preservation Grant, PPC has developed a multimedia approach to share Austin’s Black history, including genealogical research, in-person and virtual Black History Tours, Juneteenth and Freedom Communities celebrations, and interpretive signage throughout the park.

Lives Remembered: Black History in Pease Park has been developed in collaboration with Javier Wallace of Black Austin Tours and Funmi Ogunro of Art is Cool. This new program ensures that Pease Park continues to serve as a space for community connection, education, and celebration of Austin’s Black heritage.
