Composting at Pease Park

Alicia, our Horticulture Coordinator, manages a composting program for our PPC team. Each week, PPC team members who do not have City of Austin composting bins at their homes bring their compostable materials to Alicia, and she adds them to our Pease Park composting pile. She turns it and maintains it, and then puts the resulting nutritious soil back into the park garden beds.

Since our team started composting in December of 2023, we have contributed 715 lbs of material to this effort!

By diverting food waste from landfills, we are able to reduce the carbon emissions associated with waste (transporting trash in large trucks, emissions that occur in landfills, etc) and create a usable and useful additive to the soil. This improves tree and plant health by adding rich nutrients that are often missing in urban soils. It is also a good practice for our work community where people from different households are contributing to achieve something as a team.

And as you can see in this photo, the critters that call Pease Park home sometimes find some goodies in the compost pile!
